Plastics and Our Health

HEALTH CONCERNS WITH FOOD AND BEVERAGE USE OF PLASTICS:

Research has shown that plastics may leach harmful toxins into food or drink causing health problems. Dioxin is one such toxin that can leach from plastics – Dioxin is a known carcinogen.
A Perth doctor, who is a specialist in cancer, advised to never use plastic bottles as they may leach a toxin (Dioxin) which mimics oestrogen, a hormone which research has shown may lead to certain cancers and particularly breast cancer as some cancers are oestrogen dominant. The doctor stated at the time (2005) her concern of the likely increase in five to ten years of the incidence of breast cancer in young women, who are doing the right thing by drinking more water....but sadly in a toxic vessel. Sadly it appears the increase of breast cancer is happening.

BISPHENOL A (BPA):

Most plastics contain BISPHENOL A (BPA), which has shown to be a danger to our health.
BPA is an industrial chemical used to make a hard, clear plastic found in many everyday consumer products, including reusable plastic water bottles and baby bottles. BPA is also found in epoxy resins, which act as a protective lining on the inside of aluminium drink bottles and food tins.

A Centre for Disease Control study detected BPA in the urine of 95% of adults sampled. Scientists have measured BPA in the blood of pregnant women, in umbilical cord blood and in the placenta, all at levels demonstrated in animals to alter development. BPA has been found to stimulate prostate cancer cells and cause breast tissue changes that resemble early stages of breast cancer. Miscarriages have been attributed to women with over threefold higher levels of BPA in their blood. Other adverse effects of BPA include early onset of puberty, changes in gender-specific behaviour, decreased testosterone, increased prostate, decreased sperm production, altered immune function, hyperactivity, increased aggressiveness and impaired learning. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphenol_A

Plastics leaching BPA is significantly increased when plastic warms up, i.e. left in the sun or in warm places, microwaved and also when plastic is re-used and starts to become worn.
