Plastics & Our Environment
HAVE YOU HEARD:
There is a floating pool of 3 million tons of plastic waste caught swirling around in the undercurrents of the Pacific Ocean, called “THE GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH” which is twice the size of France.
Researchers from the 5 Gyres Institute (www.5gyres.org) believed there were a further 4 or 5 large plastic rubbish pits caught swirling around in other areas of the oceans and have embarked on a mission this year to sail to each of these suspected sites to gain samples and evidence, with the plan of releasing a global photo next year portraying the extent of plastics caught up in our oceans, greatly endangering our marine life.
So far, the researchers have found large plastic rubbish pits at each gyre (powerful rotating ocean currents) they have been too and SADLY have now found plastic pellets (from plastics that have broken down over many years) inside the stomachs of fish.
When a 3000 mile ‘plastic’ trawl was done just recently from Perth, Australia to Mauritius ALL of the 12 water samples collected contained plastics. Compelling evidence now shows that the plastics aren’t just contained to the gyres....”THE WORLD’S OCEANS ARE COVERED WITH A THIN PLASTIC SOUP OR CONFETTI that’s thickest in the middle of the gyres!”
AS PLASTICS CAN TAKE UP TO 1000 YEARS TO COMPLETELY BREAK DOWN, WE ALL NEED TO CHOOSE REUSABLE ITEMS OVER DISPOSABLES AND STOP USING OR GREATLY REDUCE OUR USE OF PLASTICS. ONLY THEN... WILL OUR MARINE LIFE AND OUR PLANET HAVE A CHANCE!

- Charles Moore: Seas of plastic
Each year we are throwing away 30 billion plastic bottles worldwide. These plastic bottles lined up end to end, would go around the world 15 TIMES EVERY YEAR! Most of these bottles end up in landfill or our oceans greatly polluting our planet and endangering our marine life! Plastic bottles can take up to 1000 years to biodegrade!
Please support our environment and Take-a-tanka!
